Shera licenses DCT's Lightfoot Java core for secure communication applications

London, UK and Taipei, Taiwan, February 1, 2002 - - Shera International has acquired a license to use DCT's Lightfoot™ Java™ processor core for inclusion in a secure SoC (system-on-chip). Taiwan-based Shera International provides engineering and manufacturing support for global electronic OEM customers.

"We were looking for a J2ME-compatible Java bytecode processor with comprehensive RTOS and development tool support which we could exploit to create a more versatile platform for secure communication systems", says Jerry Crosetti, President of Shera International. "The Lightfoot core stood out because of its small footprint, fast execution and tiny memory requirements."

The SoC project, which will be completed by Q3 2002, will deliver a single chip microcontroller for embedded applications requiring secure communications. The chip will integrate DCT's 32-bit Lightfoot processor core with industry-standard communication ports, analog and digital I/O, on-chip program and data Flash, hardware-assisted encryption processing, plus proprietary I/O to support the particular design requirements of Shera's client base.

"The Lightfoot core contains only 26k gates", adds Crosetti. "Bytecode executes as fast as compiled C on a 32-bit RISC processor with the same clock, and is two to four times denser than C applications we have developed for other processors. DCT’s J2ME™-compliant library is also many times more compact than any other offering we have seen. The extremely low program memory requirements allow the entire program memory to reside on-chip, greatly improving security. That puts a lot of pluses in the advantages column, with virtually none in the negative column - a very rare situation in my experience."

"Secure network communications is a prime target market for our technology. It fits well in this space, as this licensing deal with Shera illustrates", says DCT’s Chief Operations Officer, Chris Turner. "The Lightfoot core opens up radical possibilities for designers of networking and mobile devices, and we are planning to offer off-the-shelf microcontroller devices for this sector by Q3 2002, to support OEMs operating at lower volumes."
